Exercise 1/19/2010

First and Chalmers -> Fifth and Green = .7 miles

Wright and Green -> First and Chalmers = .8 miles

First and Chalmers -> ARC = .5 miles

Elliptical = 407 Calories, about 2 miles

ARC -> First and Chalmers = .5 miles

First and Chalmers -> GSLIS = .5 miles

GSLIS -> First and Chalmers = .5 miles

Total miles walked: 5.6

I could have sworn it was going to be more than that after I totaled it up. Maybe I did more miles on the elliptical than I remember. Mileage comes from Google Maps.

Also most “calories burned” calculators say I burned between 350-400 calories walking. 800 calories total.

I don’t mind exercising. Key is to cut down what I eat.

What makes me happy?

I was inspired by Loryn to figure out what makes me happy. I think the conversation had something to do with how Black women are often portrayed as unhappy unless they have a man. I’m sure I could continue to add to this. An interesting thread is that most of the things that make me happy involve my effects on other people.

  • Traveling
  • Trying new things, even if I don’t like them
  • Cooking
  • Teaching
  • Making other people laugh
  • Writing
  • Singing
  • Listening to music

There are a lot of things on this list that I’m going to have to make time for. What makes you happy?

Leaving 2009 Behind

So I’ve been trying to figure out why I was so down yesterday. I think the first stirs up a lot of memories for me. Mostly good. I don’t know why I miss what I had before. The good times do occasionally mask the bad times. But it’s not fair to my present. Of course it’s good to reflect on the past, but after a certain point it’s time to move on.

I keep saying that 2009 was a difficult year, and with good reason. But now, perhaps, it’s time to leave all of that in 2009. Time to forgive and look forward to what is to come, to drop all preconceived notions and come to the table with as little baggage as possible. I have a lot of love to give, and it doesn’t make sense to waste it on a past that will never return.

So here’s to a new year. I ate some black-eyed peas for luck yesterday. I sure hope they work.
